Criminal Defense Attorney

A criminal defense attorney is a legal expert who provides legal advice and defends a criminal defendant in a court of law.  In order to practice law in a particular state, the criminal defense attorney must pass the state bar exam for attorneys for that state.

Criminal defense attorneys may specialize in a particular area of criminal law such as homicide or tax fraud.  A criminal defendant is best served by obtaining counsel from a lawyer with experience related to the crime(s) he or she has been charged.

Defendants who are unable to afford an attorney may have one appointed to defend them by the court at public expense.  In rare instances, defendants may be allowed to defend themselves.

Some attorneys have become famous by defending clients of high stature in criminal cases.  Of course, the attorney in these instances must win and the case must be considered difficult for the lawyer to become well know and respected.
