A Permanent Resident Card, also known as a "Green
Card" is issued by the United States to resident
aliens who have met the conditions and been granted
permanent resident status in the U.S.
The term "green card" comes from the color of the
original cards that were issued. The green card
was (and still is) a coveted item for a non-U.S.
Citizen to possess. Although the resident alien
need not carry a valid card on his or her person, he
or she must have ready access to the card and be able
to present it upon demand by proper authorities.
Many countries are beginning to require that a
national identification card be issued to all of their
citizens for easy proof of citizenship. The
issuance of such a national ID card has been resisted
in the United States over privacy fears. At the
present time, the most often used form of
identification carried by U.S. Citizens is their State
issued drivers license. Of course, these
licenses offer no proof of U.S. citizenship and are
easily obtained by illegal aliens.
